Townships have the powers that have been granted to them through the Michigan Constitution or State Law. Pine River Township has accepted the responsibility to locally zone for at least the past half-century. We keep our zoning ordinance current and relevant by reviewing its content every five years. Zoning is the division our township into different districts and zones in which certain activities are prohibited and others are permitted. It is the regulation and restriction of land uses based on a pre-determined plan.

Zoning defines the rules that govern what and where people can and cannot build in our community. The purpose of zoning is to protect and conserve the value of land use by siting similar land uses closer to each other and dissimilar land uses further away from each other.

Zoning laws enacted by Pine River Township define how a specific parcel of land may be developed and used. Zoning laws place restrictions on the extent to which a land may be developed.
